Description:
UPDATE - 06/26/2009. We received the following from Pooki’s foster mom:
Pooki is the sweetest, friendliest 5 year old female cocker spaniel I’ve met. She loves humans but is a little shy at first. Pooki also loves car rides, walks in the park, kisses, treats and snuggling, lots of snuggling, In the mornings she spends her time looking out the front door or running in the yard. Afternoons are spent napping. She gives lots of kisses, too. If you want a cocker spaniel that wants love and wants to give love, then Pooki is the companion for you.
In a multi pooch household, Pooki always wants to be first whether it’s running down the stairs, racing out the back door, greeting her family when they come home or getting fed. She likes to be front and center but is not aggressive about it. She is currently in a foster home with a 10 year old female cocker spaniel and 95% of the time they get along. If they get into a snarl, it’s usually over who gets to the water bowl first or who gets the first kiss. Because Pooki isn’t too fond of younger kids, I would not recommend a home with children under age 13. She is somewhat obedient but could use some manners training. She also does not respond to the ‘come’ command. She will dart out a door or if you drop the leash she will flee; her nickname is Houdini. Pooki would do best in a home where there is a fenced-in yard so she can run without fear of escaping.
Pooki’s health is good except for a severe ear infection for which she has been treated. She was also hit by a car when she was younger so she does have a very modest limp. Because of this, Pooki will have to be on Rimadyl and Cosequin long term.
Pooki does her best with housebreaking, but she does have some accidents if left longer than four hours. She does well in the crate and is basically a laid back, friendly girl just waiting to be loved forever. The ideal home would be one with young retirees who like to take walks, a fenced in yard and no children under 13. Pooki will bring joy to your hearts for many, many years. She is spayed and up to date with all her shots. She is a real love!!
ORIGINAL POSTING: We got a call recently from the cousin of a woman who died suddenly at the young age of 38. She left behind three children and two cocker spaniels. Could we help rehome the cockers? How could we say no?!?
Pooki has gone into foster care near Reisterstown, MD. We just received the following update from her foster mom:
“Pooki Bear,” as we call her, is one of the nicest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to foster. She doesn’t have an aggressive bone in her body….just a few broken ones from when she was hit by a car two years ago. But that has not dampened her sprit or activity level one bit. The broken bones just add a little more of a wiggle to her waddle. She wiggles her butt so fast when she greets you, that all you see is a big black blur. I have never seen a dog wiggle a butt as fast in my life. And when she greets you, she doesn’t jump up on you or bark for attention….what you get instead is wiggles and smiles.
She loves to be by your side resting her head on your lap or feet. She doesn’t have the need to stick to you like glue….like some of our Velcro Cockers can do. As long as she can see you from a distance, she is content to stay relaxed in her favorite corner of the sofa or family room. She gets along famously with her two Cocker foster brothers and is willing to share her toys and food…. AND she gets along with cats…. she is very social and you can tell that she was loved. It doesn’t matter where she is, the house, the yard, or the car…she is an extremely well-behaved and wonderful little lady….She’s an absolute jewel and I adore her. I am sure that once you meet her, you will adore her, too.

The medical and custodial care of the many Cockers in our care is tremendous. More and more dogs are abandoned with urgent and serious medical issues. We are committed to providing the best possible care for these forgotten friends. Unfortunately, the mounting high costs are beginning to limit the number of dogs we are able to take into our program. Even if you cannot adopt or foster one of our current adoptable dogs, please consider making a donation. The Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization and your donations are entirely tax deductible.
